A hidden oasis among West African countries, Liberia is often overlooked, but those who travel there will return with stories of adventures, joy, and vibrancy. Traveling through Liberia won’t be a walk in the park, as it has rough roads and lacks general infrastructure. Still, for those looking for an extraordinary adventure, Liberia is the place for you.

Liberia’s Top Natural Destinations

SAPO NATIONAL PARK

Sapo National Park is one of the most intact sections of the Upper Guinea Rainforest. It is an important habitat for the Western chimpanzee, pygmy hippo, forest elephant, and many other species. Guided tours can be organized to walk through this vast, beautiful rainforest. Although many of the animals are elusive, there is evidence of life all around, from chimpanzee trails to elephant footprints.

Guided hikes can be done on short-day trips or multi-day hikes. Travelers can stay at the Sapo Ecolodge, conveniently located outside the park by the beautiful Sinoe River. Sapo Ecolodge is a sustainable, ecologically friendly lodge with solar power and hot water that provides a percentage of its earnings to the communities surrounding the park. The lodge has three chalets and a platform for camping. Staying at the lodge enables travelers to explore the park during the day and contribute to the community through their dollars spent at the ecolodge.

While staying at Sapo Ecolodge, you will be completely engrossed in Liberian culture. Cultural performances are put on, traditional food is served, and local hospitable staff are looking to share their stories. Sapo National Park is the jewel of Liberia and is an absolute must-see when visiting. That said, a trip to Sapo National Park must be planned beforehand. You will need a four-wheel-drive vehicle to get there. It is also best to visit during the dry season (Dec-May)!

KPATAWEE WATERFALL

Another must-see destination for nature lovers is the Kpatawee Waterfall. Kpatawee is an incredible cascading waterfall about 3 hours outside Monrovia, both untouched and uncrowded. Many visitors visit and play in the waterfalls for the day, but the Kpatawee Resort is also there if you want to stay the night. This eco-friendly resort is a comfortable and immersive way to experience the falls. Both huts and tents are available for rent. The resort will also organize guided hikes in the forest, bonfires, and village visits for their guests upon request.

Historical Sites in Liberia 

PROVIDENCE ISLAND

Providence Island in Monrovia is historically significant. It was a place where slaves were forced onto boats and shipped to the Americas, but in 1822, the site was reclaimed and served as the first place freed slaves arrived back in West Africa. Providence Island was the gateway for people to return home and establish what is today the country of Liberia. Today, in Providence Island, many monuments and symbols represent the struggles this country has been through. A trip to Providence Island must be arranged through a tour guide or the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Information, and Tourism (MICAT). 

Another unmissable stop for history buffs is the National Museum of Liberia. The museum showcases the country’s rich and complex history and heritage. Established in 1958, it houses a diverse collection of artifacts, artworks, and historical documents that chronicle Liberia's journey from before its founding to the present day. It also serves as an educational institution that fosters a deeper understanding of Liberia's cultural identity among its citizens and visitors.

Adventure Activities in Liberia

Liberia is an adventure lover's dream, from the mountains to the sea. Below are some of Liberia's top attractions that cannot be missed when visiting. 

SURFING

Robertsport is a surfing hotspot, home to Robertsport Surf Club. Robertsport Surf Club is a local surfing organization that hosts events, rents out surfboards, provides surfing lessons, and is a place for travelers from all over to connect and swap stories of the day’s waves. The energy in Robertsport is unlike anywhere you've ever been. Full of life and love and people looking to connect.

There are multiple great places to stay in Robertsport for all budgets. On the more economical side, Philip’s Guest House, run by a local Liberian surfer, is a great place for surfers or travelers who are on a budget and also want to meet and gather with other surfers and adventurers. Phillip has been hosting visitors for years and is an expert at helping to arrange surfing, snorkeling, boat tours, and more.

Right down the beach from Phillips Guest House is Nana’s Lodge. Nana’s is on one of the most beautiful beaches in Robertsport, offering cabins and a delicious restaurant. Even if you're not staying there, Nana’s is worth a visit to meet new people, have a cold beer, rent an umbrella, or join in on beach activities like beach volleyball.

If you want a more private escape, check out Warkolor Jungle Lodge and Reserve. This new eco-resort has several pools, beautiful rooms, and beachside dining. It is also tucked away in the Warkolor Forest, which provides endless access to pristine beaches and rainforests.

You do not have to be a surfer to enjoy this beautiful town, but if you ever want to try it out, Robertsport would be the perfect place!

HIKING

For adventure seekers looking to stay on dry land, hiking Mount Nimba cannot be skipped. One of the tallest mountains in West Africa, summiting Nimba offers views of Liberia, Guinea, and Cote d’Ivoire. One of the most popular trails is the Tri-County Trail, which is roughly 8 miles in total. One does not have to be a super experienced hiker to complete this trek, but hikers need to hire a guide, have good hiking boots, and be ready for slippery and steep areas of the trail. 

The newly constructed Nimba Ecolodge is the only accommodation option in East Nimba Nature Reserve. It is the perfect place to rest and reset after a long day of hiking while enjoying stunning views of Mount Nimba. Other accommodation options are in Yekepa at the base of Mount Nimba and Saniquellie, about 45 minutes from East Nimba Nature Reserve.

Liberia’s Top Artisanal Experiences        

Liberia is home to an array of expert craftspeople and artisans. Although artisans can be found throughout the country, the largest number are in Monrovia. To buy artisanal products, head to the Liberian traditional arts and crafts market outside of the Mamba Point Hotel or the busy Waterside Market. At these two markets, you can find wood carvings, leather goods, traditional cloth, bags, jewelry, and more.

Monrovia has a number of small businesses selling unique Liberian goods. Check out Forever Glamorous, a woman-owned business, for hand-made traditional African clothing and jewelry. Owner Krubo Nwainokpor has her curated collection on display and hosts personalized jewelry-making classes where travelers can completely put together and customize their pieces. 

Another place to buy beautifully made items is Tete’s African Interiors, which specializes in bedding, baskets, vases, and more, all hand-beaded or hand-dyed. Expert craftspeople from Ghana, Liberia, and other countries in Africa make each item by hand with its unique character.
